Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Explorium to learn about a key player in Summit County's history—the Beaver! We had a great time exploring this fascinating critter through our craft of the week. Be sure to check it out below, and don’t miss our new craft at Mountain Top this week!
What’s a Beaver’s favorite type of instrument?
Materials:
Paper Bags
Pre cut Teeth and Tail
Googly Eyes
Markers
Glue
Science Fact
Beavers have special teeth that never stop growing! Their front teeth are orange and super strong, perfect for chewing through wood. This helps them build their dams and lodges. So, if you see a beaver gnawing on a tree, it’s just making sure their teeth stay the right length!
Child Development Fact
Using glue and coloring helps children develop important fine motor skills. When they use glue, they practice gripping and controlling tools, which strengthens their hand muscles. Coloring enhances their hand-eye coordination and encourages creativity. Both activities also promote focus and patience, essential skills for their overall development!
Directions:
Give your child a paper bag and tell them we will transform it into a Beaver puppet with just a few tools!
First Cut out teeth and tail and help child glue in appropriate places (teeth on bag “flap” or bottom, and tail towards the opening, opposite of the flap)
Next glue the googly eyes over the teeth and make sure to include a little beaver nose!
Cut out little paws to put on the sides of the bag for the beaver's hands!
Add ears on top if desired and help child decorate their beaver puppet!
