If you’re coming to Breckenridge there is no better way to spend a sunny summer afternoon than going for a family hike.  Whether you want to view famous art in the woods, get some solitude, or learn about the plentiful mining history of Breckenridge, we have you covered! With trails that are short, scenic, and accessible, you'll find plenty of options to keep your little ones excited and engaged. Here are some of the best day hikes for kids in town.


Trollstigen Trail

Length: 0.25 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy

No family trip to Breckenridge is complete without a visit to Isak Heartstone. This short trail leads to the famous giant wooden troll sculpture created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. The trailhead is located near the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, and the path is well-marked and easy to follow. 


Sawmill Reservoir Trail

Length: 1.3 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy

Sawmill Reservoir Trail is an excellent choice for families with young children. This short hike starts at the Snowflake Lift area and follows the creek up to Sawmill Reservoir which is a perfect spot to stop for a snack and take in the view! The trail is also mostly shaded and is perfect for hot summer days.


Iowa Hill Trail

Length: 1.2 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy

The Iowa Hill Trail is not only easy and short but also educational. This hike takes you through a historic mining area, with interpretive signs along the way that provide fascinating insights into Breckenridge's mining past. The trail loops through a forested area and includes several old mining structures that are sure to spark the imagination of young explorers. It's a great way to combine outdoor fun with a bit of history.


Carter Park Trail

Length: 1.4 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy

Carter Park Trail is the perfect hike for those looking to stay close to town, and as an added bonus it starts and ends right next to Carter Park Playground! The trail winds through a lovely forested area and offers beautiful views of the town and the Tenmile Range. There are also plenty of other trails that branch off if your family is looking for something a bit longer.


Minnie Mine Loop

Length: 1.5 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy

Minnie Mine Loop is another wonderful opportunity for you and your kids to learn about Breckenridge’s rich mining history. Along with remnants of old mining equipment, the loop also provides scenic views of the forest and the surrounding mountains.
